NEEDOO - ARTEMIDE

Birds need Nest !

Davide Oppizzi designs Needoo, a new project for Artemide to take care of the environment. It is not only an outdoor system but above all a place ready to welcome biodiversity.
Made up of a bollard and three different poles, it offers perfectly controlled light that respects nature by illuminating only what is necessary.

The pole adds a bird shelter to its top, made of a special material that guarantees weather resistance, longevity, low maintenance and exceptional insulation for all seasons, thus recreating optimal conditions for the life of birds and small mammals and some species of insects.

In accordance with the standards already studied by the largest manufacturers of professional nesting boxes, it is made of moulded wood-concrete: a material made of 100% natural materials without the addition of adhesives.

It will be possible to choose the most suitable nest for each species, which differs mainly in the diameter of the entrance hole.

The luminous head is underneath the nest, it is a disc that shields the vision of light and becomes a support surface on which small animals can rest.

Needoo is a perfect system to help animals in our contemporary spaces, offering adequate shelter in parks and repopulating urban areas with different species to enrich everyone's quality of life. As numerous studies have shown, the lack of nesting spaces is one of the causes of the loss of biodiversity, so Needo wants to be a small but concerted sign, an action to reverse this worrying trend.

The different versions allow light to be calibrated to design landscapes in which man and nature can live in harmony.

It applies a language of light already developed by Artemide for other projects that starts from an innovative vision to outdoor lighting design. It is not necessary to colonise outdoor spaces with a uniform and constant light, in order to feel safe and understand the dimension of the space around us we only need a few references. This approach respects nature, allows considerable energy savings and also enables the creation of particularly interesting light landscapes that rediscover the rhythms between light and darkness.

Needo can create an asymmetrical light, perfect for illuminating pathways, a rotosymmetrical light that marks out areas to stop, or a blade of light that points in a direction, helping in the perception of space.
It combines an approach that is attentive to the perceptual needs of humans and animals, and talks about respect and sharing space.

It is essential for birds to be able to find their way around using the night sky with the stars and the moon as reference points. Needo's controlled light does not disturb this perception, it does not dazzle.

The careful design of the optics, their positioning, the quality of the light and its control by means of integrated sensors help man and nature to coexist, to respect the circadian rhythms of each species and to have a positive energy balance.
The interaction of light with man and nature is guided by the programming of intelligent sensors that calibrate the intensity according to presence in a slow progression that does not create contrast disturbances.

The approach of the creator Davide Oppizzi :
Needo respects the alchemy of night and nature. It significantly reduces light pollution and the impact on flora and fauna so as not to disturb their photo-biological cycle. It is a silent light, it fits into the delicate balance of biodiversity and supports it.

Today it is the duty of every designer, architect or manufacturer to integrate attention to biodiversity into every square metre stolen from nature for all outdoor installations, so that future generations can continue to marvel at the beauty of the biodiversity that has existed on our earth for billions of years.

It was while immersing myself in this incredible project that I realised how the importance of preserving our diversity necessarily involves re-learning to observe nature, its needs and its behaviour.
